An Introduction to the 2008 Santa Barbara International Film Festival

Yes, it is crunch time on Chapala, as the city’s proudest and most successful festival operation gears up for another 10 days of film-obsessive activity. Our rich little tourist town will host stars, artistes, craft people, seminars, panels, swanky parties, homegrown filmmakers, and what is, for some of us, the festival’s heart and soul: films from around the globe inviting us to reflect on both the state of the world and the state of the cinematic art form.

SBIFF 2007 Goes East

A chilly wind is whipping around Chapala Street, and Roger Durling-the well-known and charismatic director of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival-is dodging distractions in the office by walking briskly to a nearby coffeehouse while trying to explain the latest twists in the organism he heads. Part of his challenge in this, his fourth year at the helm, was to respond to the twin sisters of huge acclaim and street-level dissonance regarding last year’s festival.

Yes, it’s well and good that the world at large has come to know the name Philip Seymour Hoffman, whose knock-out performance in Capote is rightfully racking up trophies in the awards season (a Golden Globe and Los Angeles Film Critics Award so far, and an Oscar nomination with good odds for winning).
