Cristine Sharkey
My mom, Cristine Sharkey, died on July 28, 2008. We are having a memorial mass at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 11:00 am this Saturday, April 4th (her birthday).
Cristine was born on April 4, 1911 in Kansas to Fred and Jane Worrall. There were seven children in the family. Cristine out-lived all of her siblings.
In 1934 my mother married Miles Sharkey. They settled first in Los Angeles and later in Orange County. In 1960 Cristine and Miles relocated to Santa Barbara. They were married for 63 years. My dad died in 1998.
My mom and dad were actively involved in Mt. Carmel parish and school and St. Francis Hospital. Cristine also volunteered her time at the Mental Health Association Thrift Store. My mother loved music, song and words. Cristine braided rugs and knitted afghans. Cristine made angel food cakes that would melt in your mouth and baked a mean oatmeal cookie. Cristine was generous with her time and possessions. Cristine was a spiritual person and was a devoted follower of Jesus Christ.
Cristine and Miles had seven children. Monica died in 2004. Their other children are Patricia (Fullerton, CA), Miles (Oak View), Phillip (Truckee), Christopher (Fredonia, WI), Frederick (San Jose, CA) and Catherine (Santa Barbara). Twenty one grandchildren survive Miles and Cristine. Grandson, Vincent Carter, died in 2008. There are 15 great-grandchildren, the latest, Jack Alexander Sharkey, arrived on March 20, 2009.
I want to say extra thanks to Noelia Vasquez for the loving care she gave my mother these last ten years.
