AMERICANA THE BEAUTIFUL: Setting aside the increasingly slippery business of what defines patriotism, something jarring this way comes these days for anyone in the 1400 block of Anacapa Street. An epic-scaled American flag once again festoons the huge backside of the Lobero Theatre, timed for Independence Day, and begging even more questions than in its earlier appearance on this highly public wall.

Cottage Gets a Check Up

Though most levels of care at the three Cottage hospitals in Santa Barbara County fall in line with those of medical centers throughout the United States, a federal government report reviewing 4,500 U.S. hospitals found that Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital lags in treating surgery patients with preventive antibiotics one hour before incision as well as stopping the antibiotics within a day of the completion of surgery.

The Refugio Fire 1955

Though no one yet realizes it, the Refugio Fire, as it will soon be called, will burn for 10 days, consume more than 77,000 acres of vegetation, scar the entire length of the Santa Ynez Mountains from Refugio to San Marcos Pass, and call for a drastic reorientation of fire policy.

Santa Anas

These devil winds are known by many names-simoon, santa ana or sundowner in Southern California; chinook in Colorado; ghibli in the Middle East; zonda in the Argentinian Andes. It is a condition initiated by conditions a thousand miles away, where high pressure on the western slope of the Rocky Mountains forces the dry, hot desert air toward the Pacific Coast.
