1st Thursday Reminder

Don’t forget that next Thursday, July 5, is the monthly 1st Thursday event all throughout the galleries, eateries, and public spaces of downtown Santa Barbara. The Indy is sponsoring a performance by Reid Spencer at Borders, and there’s plenty more fun from 5 to 8 p.m.

ShiiMac Halibut

It’s halibut season, and the firm, subtle, yet full-flavored fish can stand up to more than most fellow formerly finned creatures. Plus it seems to do well in concert with other tastes, as opposed to some fish that are happiest sushi grade and solo (e.g., salmon). I wanted to try to crust Alaskan halibut, but that seemed too hard to pull off-or stick on, as the case may be.

See The Itals, Save the Coast

One of Jamaica’s most famous reggae bands, The Itals-formed in 1975 by Keith Porter and Ronnie Davis, later adding David Isaacs and Porter’s daughter Kada, a onetime UCSB student-are coming to SOhO tonight, June 28, in a benefit concert for the Santa Barbara chapter of the Surfrider Foundation.

Positively State Street

EL BUKI IS BACK: Though the feathered locks and sequined costumes of Los Bukis are long gone, the qualities that made Marco Antonio Sol-s the group’s unstoppable force-his flair for the dramatic, consummate musicianship, and dashing good looks-are alive and well.

Pick it Up

What do you get when Jack Johnson’s heartbeat-steady drummer Adam Topol is let loose on his own creative path and teams up with Franchot Tone on guitar, The Eels’ Koool G Murder on keys, TV on the Radio’s Dave Ralike on horns, and Sheryl Crow’s singer Chris Joyner?
