Under the bright lights of the Brawlin’ Betties’ home track at Earl Warren Showgrounds, two roller derby teams jammed, boogied, and blocked their way through another kickass November Knockout event.
The Betties went against Wasteland out of Antelope Valley, trading points and body-checks for the full hour of action. Sailor Doom and Guilly Guillotine stood out from the pack, with our home team ultimately taking the win, 200 to 165.
The final score, however, felt secondary to the good time of the event itself. The place was packed ― fans, friends, and families cheered on their skaters. Coffee and poutine were available and paired surprisingly well. Volunteers helped with everything from ticketing to officiating.
And the vibe was merry ― both teams are members of gender-inclusive leagues, with the organization Free Mom Hugs on hand to dispense free pins, stickers, flags, and yes, a few hugs. Xanadu Skate Boutique had a table filled with skating goodies. Everyone felt welcome and everyone seemed happy to be there.
Saturday’s bout ended the Betties’ official season but they just announced a winter miracle: the Winter WonderSLAM!, an all-level, all-gender open scrimmage where the Long Nights (black jerseys) will take on the Snow Angels (white jerseys). There will be specified rookie-only and skill-level jams to ensure everyone gets safe track time and valuable experience, the team said.
It takes place on December 15 at 4 p.m. at Earl Warren. Go here for event details and registration info.
