Your United Nations Association is focused on bringing the work of the United Nations to our Santa Barbara community, and our community’s concerns to the United Nations. The UNA of Santa Barbara and Tri-Counties is one of the oldest in the United States, chartered in the 1940s. We created the UNA Santa Barbara Peace Prize, now in its 6th year, given to stellar awardees doing incredible work in the world, from right here in Santa Barbara.

We’re hosting a monthly “World At Our Corner” series of speakers on the most pressing global issues of our time. From refugee crises due to conflict and climate to the courageous human rights fight for women in Iran, to protecting the planet from climate change to violent conflicts – these are the important crises of our time.  Our speakers will cover these topics, and more.

All of our sessions are free, on Zoom, and open to the public. Relax in the comfort of your home and learn with us as we discuss some of the world’s most pressing problems with leaders working on the front lines.

We also invite you to become a member and join in the important conversations affecting our world.

The most serious threat facing our world: an extinction event.

A Discussion with Dr. Tom English.

May 23rd

5:00 PM

The biggest threat to humanity today Is a potential mass extinction. This would drive more than half of the plant to extinction. Given current conditions, this extinction event could occur in the latter half of this century. It’s caused by a combination of two crises:

  • Climate change
  • Destruction of tropical rainforest.

Both of these crises are avoidable, with existing technologies. The economics associated with these solutions can also be very favorable.

Dr. English is a member of the United Nations Association – Orange County Chapter, and a Creation Care Educator for the Presbyterian Church USA. He recently completed an “Environmental Education Series” of nine presentations designed to make the participants more comfortable discussing issues such as the Climate Crisis with their friends, associates, and family.

He has directed major environmental programs for IBM, GE, JPL, EPA, and the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group. His legislative accomplishments include being the architect of the California Clean Air Act, which resulted in bringing California much cleaner air while saving several billion dollars.

Dr. English founded and managed the High-Level Nuclear Waste (HLNW) program, a joint effort of JPL, Caltech, and Scripps Institution of Oceanography. The group worked for  President Carter’s Office of Science and Technology Policy; the Government of Sweden; NASA; and the California Energy Commission. Dr. English and two colleagues presented a three-day environmental management seminar in Moscow for the Russian government.
