Please join your United Nations Association of Santa Barbara for the next installment in our “World At Our Corner” speaker series.
We will be hosting the ebullient Elsa Granados!
She’s the Executive Director of Standing Together to End Sexual Assault (STESA), a Santa Barbara non-profit to help rape survivors.
She’s just made a HUGE achievement – she helped Spain get 52 (!) rape crisis centers opened – a first for them, and a huge helping hand reaching out from Santa Barbara to the world! The Santa Barbara Independent ran a great story on it.
Spain has a serious violence-against-women problem, struggles with femicide. Opening rape crisis centers was a big move for them. Elsa was called by a government official in the Ministry of Equality, and she didn’t realize at that time how huge this was going to be.
Spain has also been a world leader in passing legislation to advance women’s rights, due to their Ministra de Egualidad Irene Montero and President Pedro Sanchez.
Elsa’s work is quite stunning, given Spain has historically been a very patriarchal country, and through the end of the Franco regime in the 1980’s, quite repressive to women. Opening 52 rape crisis centers with her guidance, well, it’s quite the achievement.
Please join us Tuesday July 25th at 5:30 PM to meet and talk with Elsa Granados as our next World At Our Corner special guest speaker, right here from Santa Barbara!
