Coal Oil Point Reserve
Western Snowy Plover nesting season begins in March. This threatened species of shorebird nests on the beach at Coal Oil Point Reserve. We are seeking volunteers to assist with their protection so that they may successfully breed and raise their flightless chicks on the beach. Docents spend two hours per week on Sands Beach in Goleta, educating the public about Snowy Plovers and requesting that beachgoers respect the plover habitat. For example, docents may ask people to exercise their dogs at another beach, or to avoid sensitive habitat areas of the beach.
The next training to become a docent will be Thursday, March 6th at 11:00 am at the Nature Center at Coal Oil Point Reserve. Classroom trainings typically last 1- 1.5 hours and are followed by an on-the-beach shift training on another date.
