Film maker, producer, director and editor Abdul Malik Abbott will be speaking at the Legacy Art SB Gallery about art in documentary film. Abbott shot and edited a short documentary on local artist Irma Cavat, whose retrospective, curated by daughter Nika Cavat, offers an intimate portrait of a woman artist with an international career.

Trained at the High School of Music and Art and NYU School of Visual Arts, Abbott went on to work on scores of commercials, music videos, films, and TV projects. He directed many of Jay Z’s first music videos and has worked with many music and film industry notables.

Additionally, he’s spoken at and created promotional films for countless African American film award ceremonies and festivals. His most recent documentary as a cinematographer and editor on renown African American artist Betye Saar, “Ready to Be A Warrior” has been earning awards and accolades across the country.

This event offers a rare opportunity for anyone interested in feature and documentary film and the arts.
