TEDxSantaBarbara, a locally organized offshoot of the international TED nonprofit, announces Making Waves: Conversations with Influencers and Disruptors, a series of virtual talks to address two major issues facing society today – COVID and systemic racism. The online events are free to attend and will broadcast live on Zoom and Facebook on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. beginning June 3 and continuing through December 2020.

  • Sigrid has 25 years of experience in non-profit environmental management and is the CEO of the Community Environmental Council.

Being held in lieu of the annual TEDxSantaBarbara in-person conference, Making Waves: Conversations with Influencers and Disruptors offers targeted, 30-minute conversations and a live Q&A with local thought leaders who will provide various lenses to the topics of COVID and systemic racism, ranging from social justice and civil discourse to environmental and educational issues. Each conversation will include clear calls to action with ways individuals can step up and make a difference.

“In both the pandemic and the pursuit of racial equity, there exists chaos, complexity, complications, and diversity,” stated Mark Sylvester, TEDxSantaBarbara Executive Producer. “Our organization is committed to bringing ideas to the table that urgently need to be discussed, no matter how challenging or uncomfortable, so these ideas can take root and build toward meaningful solutions as we learn and change together.”

The first speaker, Noah benShea, one of North America’s most respected and beloved poet philosophers, who is a Pulitzer Prize-nominated, best-selling author of 28 books, provided powerful mindsets to act on here and now with a talk titled Ten Truths to Get You Through Tough Times. With more than 20 speakers already slated, TEDxSantaBarbara is still seeking additional thought leaders to provide more diverse perspectives surrounding systemic racism. Please email mark@TEDxSantaBarbara.com if you would like to add your voice to the conversation series.
