The First Folio of William Shakespeare’s works was published in 1623.
So what, you may ask?
Well, Shakespeare died in 1616. If not for the foresight of two actors in Shakespeare’s company, seven years after his death, many of Shakespeare’s most well-known works would be lost to us. What does this mean to us in the here and now that Shakespeare did not publish many of his own plays? Irwin Appel, a professional actor, director, composer, sound designer, and artistic director of his California-based Shakespeare company Naked Shakes, shares what he has learned over a lifetime making theater. It may change the way you, read, see and experience Shakespeare!
Irwin is also the director and creator of The Death of Kings, his original adaptation of Shakespeare’s history plays, performing this October 6 and 7 in the UCSB Hatlen Theater and fresh off a triumphant performance as the closing production at the Verona Shakespeare Fringe Festival in Verona, Italy!
