During his talk, Dr. Jackman will introduce topics covered in his book Santa Barbara’s Royal Presidio: The Rise, Fall, and Rebirth of Spain’s Last Adobe Fortress, including introducing the community’s first racial and cultural diversity, and developing a unique relationship with the local Chumash population. He will also discuss the preservation and rebuilding process for the Presidio completed in the 20th century. “We are lucky to have Dr. Jackman on SBMM’s Board of Directors as his knowledge of Santa Barbara’s Spanish history is unparalleled. He captures the true essence of our community in his book allowing us to realize that we are truly living among history,” said SBMM Executive Director Greg Gorga.

Since its founding in 1782, the Santa Barbara Presidio has been at the heart of our town, with many historical personages such as Spanish King Charles III, Father Serra, Spanish Prince Felipe (now King Felipe VI), and Pearl Chase forming a major part of its story. “To walk the same paths as these historical figures mentioned in Dr. Jackman’s book is truly amazing,” continues Gorga.“Santa Barbarians have grown up around these beautiful landmarks and places of significance but without books like Dr. Jackman’s, the preservation of this material and this important history would be lost. Dr. Jackman’s book assists us in gaining a deeper understanding and connection to places surrounding us in Santa Barbara.”

The Maritime Distinguished Speaker Series is sponsored by Marie L. Morrisroe.
