You can help protect threatened shorebirds! Western Snowy Plovers are small birds that nest on the beach at UC Santa Barbara’s Coal Oil Point Reserve in Goleta. We are looking for volunteers to educate beach goers about the threatened status of the birds. Volunteers spend 2 hours a week on Sands Beach teaching the public about the Snowy Plovers, and requesting that people respect the plover habitat. For example, docents may ask people to leash their dogs, or to avoid sensitive habitat areas of the beach where the plovers nest and chicks feed.
To train as a volunteer docent, you will complete a virtual training over Zoom and a follow up shift training in person on the beach.
To receive the Zoom link for the training, please RSVP to: copr.conservation@nrs.ucsb.edu
