Science Pub: Whales in the Santa Barbara Channel

One-third of the world’s whale species have been documented in the Santa Barbara Channel, which is one of the most biologically productive marine ecosystems on our planet. Yet even with the comeback of some of the great whale populations, many still face modern threats. Marine biologist and naturalist Holly Lohuis will describe how the channel may become part of the growing network of Whale Heritage Areas, where these iconic animals are celebrated for their ecological roles, economically valued through responsible tourism, and prioritized in conservation and research. Come learn what we need to become empowered as part of an ever-growing positive shift in ocean conservation and the protection of our local whales.

Holly Lohuis has worked in marine biology education for decades, both on a global scale with Jean-Michel Cousteau and his Ocean Futures Society’s expedition team, and with deep local impact through a wide variety of regional institutions. In this talk, she’ll share personal stories from her local education work with Island Packers and Channel Islands National Park, as well the collaborative effort between many organizations and agencies to create a Whale Heritage Area in the Santa Barbara Channel.
