Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts
Hans-Joachim Roedelius, a legendary figure in contemporary music who influenced artists including Brian Eno and U2, will be performing at the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts Saturday, June 1st at 7:00 pm. He will take part in a panel discussion, sharing his processes and techniques, at 2 pm the same day.
At 82-years of age, Roedelius is considered the grandfather of Techno, Electronica, and Ambient music. Following a career as a healer, he was a founding member of the Berlin arts lab Zodiak in 1968, followed by the influential band Kluster (later Cluster and Qluster), and Harmonia. With over 2,000 compositions and over 250 releases, he continues to record and perform, often in collaboration with an international array of cutting-edge composers and musicians. Roedelius’ solo career has proven even more adventurous, winding from nascent proto-techno to meandering solo piano.
Hans-Joachim Roedelius’ relationship with the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts dates back to its beginning, with the commission of a sound installation celebrating Happy Valley’s rich history and land at the Center. Over a decade after his initial involvement, the Center is pleased to again welcome Hans-Joachim Roedelius, his family, and special guest Christopher James Chaplin. The youngest son of Hollywood legend Charlie Chaplin, who began his career as an actor and director, has collaborated with Roedelius in the past, and the Center is pleased to present this rare performance.
Concertgoers can look forward to an intimate evening of keyboards and electronic tapestries in an ever unfolding manner – often pastoral, sometimes ominous, never predictable – that often incorporates sound samples, spoken word, and piano.
A Roedelius concert is also an evening of warmth and welcome – a natural result of the love and reverence the man himself exudes, both in his art and his life.
At 2 pm, there will be a panel discussion titled The Philosophy of Sound– a rare opportunity to experience this legendary figure in music sharing his philosophies and processes.
Tickets for the performance, which is being presented with support from the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria, are $25, with the panel discussion $20. Those who sign up for both at $40, will receive a one-year membership to the Center. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts.
