Tokyo Story – Directed by Yasujirō Ozu
Saturday, June 5, 2021
“But if I had known things would come to this, I’d have been kinder to her while she was alive.”
Tokyo Story is a 1953 Japanese drama film directed by Yasujirō Ozu and starring Chishū Ryū and Chieko Higashiyama. It tells the story of an aging couple who travel to Tokyo to visit their grown children. The film contrasts the behavior of their children with that of their widowed daughter-in-law. Tokyo Story is widely regarded as Ozu’s masterpiece and is often cited as one of the greatest films ever made. In 2012, it was voted the best film of all time in a poll of film directors by Sight & Sound magazine. Please view the film prior to the seminar.
The film can be streamed on HBO Max, Criterion, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and iTunes.
