Santa Barbara: An Uncommonplace American Town

Sheila Lodge, the city’s longest-serving mayor, offers her insights and a behind-the-scenes look at urban planning history in her new book, Santa Barbara: An Uncommonplace American Town, which examines how thoughtful planning shaped our city. After years of extensive research (much of it in the Museum’s Gledhill Library!) she reveals how “Santa Barbara not only has a sense of place, it has a sense of community.”
About the Speaker:
After a career in teaching and social work and years spent as a housewife and mother of four daughters, Sheila Lodge became active in civic affairs. She served on the Santa Barbara City Planning Commission from 1973 to 1975, the City Council from 1975 to 1981, and as mayor from 1981 to 1993. Appointed again to the Planning Commission in 2009, she continues to serve the city in that capacity. She is a self-professed “incurable policy wonk,” and frequently speaks on civic matters to a variety of audiences.
