NEW VISIONS OF THE VASTITUDE:
EYES ON THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE
Saturday, November 5, 2022
2:00 – 4:00 pm (Pacific time)
Concord Hall, 1407 Chapala St., Santa Barbara, CA
Presenter: Russ Lewin
In person and live webcast (more information below)
The James Webb Space Telescope has successfully opened the next chapter in space-based telescope astronomy. It is able to detect light beyond the visible spectrum by using the infrared spectrum. Because infrared light can travel through dense clouds of gas that blocks visible light, it is possible for the new telescope to reveal regions of the universe that were previously hidden: early galaxies, planetary formation, stellar lifecycles, exoplanets, brown dwarfs and more. The stated mission of the new telescope is to find answers to three fundamental questions:
1. We wonder. It’s our nature. How did we get here?
2. Are we alone in the universe?
3. How does the universe work?
We will view and discuss the images that the James Webb Space Telescope has taken so far. We will also discuss the instruments on board the craft and the scientific discoveries that have been made so far. These new visions may open doors that inspire insights about living well on this planet and promote understanding of our relationship to our solar system.
There is no need to register to attend in person. Masks are optional in Concord Hall.
The program will be webcast live on the IWC YouTube Channel at 2:00 pm: https://www.youtube.com/user/iwcinsantabarbara/live
The program will also be recorded and posted to the same YouTube Channel for future viewing.
