Award-Winning Documentary on Lutah Maria Riggs
LUTAH A Passion for Architecture: A Life in Design returns home, after premiering at the 2014 Santa Barbara International Film Festival. The 6PM screening of LUTAH will be followed by an audience Q&A with Marc Appleton, Melinda Gándara, and Dawn Ziemer.
LUTAH focuses on the life of architect Lutah Maria Riggs (1896-1984). As a protégé of George Washington Smith, Lutah Maria Riggs designed some of Santa Barbara’s most iconic homes and buildings, such as the Lobero Theatre and Vedanta Temple. Initially eclipsed by her male contemporaries in the early 20thcentury, Lutah Maria Riggs navigated her way through the male-centric world of architecture and brought a freshness to the established architectural styles of Southern California. Riggs blazed a trail for women, relying on the courage of her convictions and a hint of eccentricity. Through never-before-seen photographs and journal entries from Riggs’s personal collection, along with candid interviews, and rare footage of private homes, this documentary reveals a side of Lutah Maria Riggs that had gone unnoticed, until now.
“LUTAH is a story of hardship and hard work. Our documentary is beautifully told through Lutah Maria Riggs’s architectural accomplishments – and those whose lives intersected with hers. It is an inspirational story. It is a timeless story. It is an extraordinary story. It is one that has left an indelible mark in our community,” said Melinda Gándara, former project archivist for the Architecture and Design Collections at UC Santa Barbara. LUTAH sheds light on a true Santa Barbara treasure.
Since premiering at the 2014 Santa Barbara International Film Festival to rave reviews, LUTAH has screened in over 60 film festivals – from the Palm Springs International Film Festival to Sweden at the Lund International Architecture Film Festival, from Mexico City to Lisbon, from the west coast to the east coast and also to where she was born, in Ohio – join us in celebrating her return home
Tickets prices range from $14 for students to $106 for VIP tickets, which include premiere seating and a pre-film reception with drinks and hors d’oeuvres. Lutah: A Passion for Architecture, a Life in Design at the Lobero Theatre, 6PM on Sunday, January 5, is presented by the Lutah Maria Riggs Society. About the Lutah Maria Riggs Society
The Lutah Maria Riggs Society was founded by Gretchen Lieff in 2013. The Lutah Maria Riggs Society is a member-supported organization founded to celebrate the courage and creative brilliance of the architect for whom the society is named. Our aim is to broaden our understanding of the many ways in witch Lutah has shaped both public and private spaces in our Santa Barbara community. This mission has been enthusiastically supported by many local organizations such as the Architectural Foundation of Santa Barbara, Casa del Herrero, Ganna Walska Lotusland, Pearl Chase Society, and the Santa Barbara Foundation.
The Lutah Maria Riggs Society is entirely volunteer and all contributions are tax deductible. Your generosity and support is greatly appreciated.
