Uptown Lounge

The Uptown Lounge brings La Alma de California back to their center stage kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month. The group is led by Endowment for the Arts Medal nominee Ricardo Sanchez of Los Alacranes; a multi-instrumentalist and hailing from San Diego, he has been  bringing the best in Mexican folk music to audiences throughout the Southwestern United States for 45 years. He’s being featured this fall in the PBS national airing of Singing My Way To Freedom, a full length documentary on the life of his brother Ramon “Chunky” Sanchez.

La Alma de California also features Grammy nominated percussionist Cougar Estrada. The former drummer for Los Lobos is considered one of the best latin percussionist in the world. His career started at 15 years old playing professionally for his dad and uncles in the latin jazz group, the Estrada Brothers. He also played drums for Spencer The Gardener in the 1990’s.

The group is supported by two local artist. Mariachi master Juan Zaragoza will play the Guitarron, a traditional six string Mexican bass guitar. Santa Barbara’s own Mark Moses Alvarado will sing lead on a selection of traditional songs and acoustic guitar.
