(SANTA BARBARA, CA, January 1, 2024) – The Kinetic Cake Expo, put on by MISC Workshop is seeking artists and artist teams to create human-powered kinetic vehicles built to compete in an art and engineering competition. MISC Workshop is a space dedicated to the creation of interactive public art, designed to engage communities in investigating the confines of our physical world by providing programming that promotes joy, self-expression, and connection through the creative experience.

The Call for Entry opens November 15, 2023 and closes on January 31, 2024. There is no barrier for teams to enter. Pre-registration is required for all artist teams to secure one of the limited slots in the event. MISC is hosting a Team Meet Up on January 20 from 1 – 3 PM at 511 E. Gutierrez St. Santa Barbara, CA. Interested artists are welcome to stop by for more information.

The Kinetic Cake Expo (KCE) is a showcase of kinetic non-motorized sculptures held at the Community Arts Workshop on April 13,  2024. Artist teams will create street legal human-powered vehicles to be presented and evaluated at this expose’. The sculptures are designed with the simple task of delivering a cake to a picnic through an obstacle course. Each team’s sculpture will be observed and judged by art, engineering, and bicycle experts.  Judges’ categories range from aesthetics to agility to construction and of course humor. Ultimately awards will be assigned and winners will be minted, perhaps even, legends will emerge.

California’s kinetic sculpture racing began in 1969 when artists Hobart Brown and Jack Mays challenged one another to  a race with human powered sculptures in Ferndale California in 1969. Now known as the Kinetic Grand Championship it has evolved over 50 years into an institution in Humboldt county. The Kinetic Grand Championship is the inspiration for Santa Barbara’s very own kinetic competition conceived by Patrick Melroy and Adrienne De Guevara of MISC Workshop.

The Kinetic Cake Expo is funded in part by the city of Santa Barbara’s Events and Festivals grant program. For more information or to register your team visit www.kineticcake.art.
