In collaboration with Earth is an exhibition highlighting coexistence with nature in the hope of inspiring collective action around reversing climate change and addressing pollution. Featuring the work of artists across California and educational workshops, we ask our community: how can we help our planet in peril?

The exhibition features the work of renowned and upcoming artists such as Kim Abeles, Erin E. Adams, Terry Arena, Edgar Fabián Frías, Maru García, Beatriz Jaramillo, Dani Kwan, Marisa de la Peña, Tori Toma, and Diane Williams. Their work reflects on such realities as 27,000 barrels leaking DDT on the ocean floor near Catalina Island, the path of environmental racism and injustice along shipping and distribution lines in California, and the regenerative power of worms.

During opening night, Kim Abeles will present her living sculpture, Hope Chest, and give away live worms for composting. Katja Seltmann of UCSB Cheadle Center for Biodiversity Ecological Restoration will update us on the condition of the regional bee population and bring specimens to examine.

Opening night kicks off a week of daily events and workshops where visitors can learn various skills such as sewing a bucket hat with recycled materials, using traditional beading techniques to create a frog — as well as their symbolism in Native culture — and how to press seaweed and other plants while exploring the art and history of marine botany herbarium specimens.

If you would like to attend our opening reception or any of the workshops, please fill out this survey in compliance with the University’s COVID-relation safety protocols.
