Join local herbalist, Nicole Iaquinto, for an enlightening herb walk at the stunning Coal Oil Point Reserve. Discover the rich variety of medicinal and edible plants that thrive along the Gaviota Coast. During this two-hour in-person walk, you’ll learn about the folk, medicinal, and culinary uses of herbs, trees, and shrubs native to our own backyard. Nicole will teach safe plant identification, ethical wildcrafting, and how to create easy herbal remedies for everyday ailments.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The key principles of SAFE plant identification and how to avoid poisonous plants.
  • How to find common edible weeds for field salads and snacks.
  • The medicinal and folk uses of herbs for everyday ailments.
  • Techniques to protect our wild medicine for future generations.

About This Location:Coal Oil Point Reserve, a protected area under the University of California Natural Reserve System, offers a picturesque coastal walk along the bluffs of Isla Vista out to the sand dunes and the wetlands of Devereux Slough. This area supports a unique mix of propagated and wild native species, including the endangered Snowy Plover. Enjoy a sunny stroll along a mostly flat, ~2-mile stretch of trail, noting that some terrain may limit wheelchair access.

General Information:

  • No restrooms are available at this location; the nearest are at the Storke & Hollister Shopping Center.
  • Dogs are welcome if kept on a leash and off the dune-protected habitat area.
  • Children under the age of 12 can attend free of charge.

Directions:

  • From 101 N: Take exit 108 for Glen Annie Road toward Storke Rd.
  • Turn left onto Glen Annie Rd.
  • Continue onto Storke Rd for 1.2 miles.
  • Turn left onto El Colegio Rd.
  • Turn right onto Camino Corto.
  • Turn right onto Sabado Tarde Rd.
  • Turn left onto Camino Majorca.
