FREE DANCE with Chris Murphy on fiddle while Simon Kiefer calls the dances 6:30-9:30pm with a FREE Contra lesson at 6:10pm
Santa Barbara contra dances are brought to you by the Santa Barbara Country Dance Society and the City of Santa Barbara Parks & Recreation Department
Chris Murphy holds a jazz improvisation and world music degree from New England Conservatory of Music and is the composer of over 300 original violin pieces and songs in the styles of Folk, Bluegrass, Jazz, Celtic, Klezmer, Italian and pop music. Playing lively & haunting fiddle tunes, fiery & enchanting gypsy jazz, bone-chilling bluegrass and Western swing fiddle music he relishes in tradition and originality, form and improvisation and the art of live performance.
Simon Kiefer is a home-grown contra dancer extraordinaire who has recently picked up the mic to further local Santa Barbara and out-of-town dancer delight! No stranger to public speaking, Simon has taken to calling like a bird on the wing, soaring to heights many of us would find dizzying at best. Having attended all of the caller’s workshops that SBCDS has held, he has benefited from the mentorship of nearly every caller in the region. Simon has a calming gentleness and sense of humor on the microphone (including his choice of photograph for this newsletter!) that you won’t want to miss.
Free Contra Dance sponsored by a community dancer. 6:30-9:30pm at the Carrillo Ballroom on February 23. A free 20 minute Contra Dance lesson will also be offered for those new to Contra Dancing at 6:10pm.
