On Saturday, September 9 at 3pm at Tecolote Book Shop, join biographer Lorissa Rinehart to go behind the scenes with one of the 20th Century’s most daring female reporters, Dickey Chapelle who jumped out of planes, patrolled the Iron Curtain, and marched through the jungles of Vietnam to get the story at any cost.
In a live taping of The Professor Buzzkill History Podcast with Dr. Joe Coohill, Rinehart will discuss her compelling new biography, First to the Front, The Untold Story of Dickey Chapelle, Trailblazing Female War Correspondent.
From 1945 to 1965, Dickey Chapelle captured the Cold War like no other. She reported from the front lines of Okinawa, Hungary, Algeria, and Cuba. She paratrooped with the 82nd, 101st, and South Vietnamese Airborne, was embedded with Special Forces in Laos, and lived for a month with an anti-communist guerrilla army in the Mekong Delta.
Throughout she cultivated a groundbreaking form of eye-witness journalism that focused on the soldiers fighting and the civilians caught in the crossfire. As a woman working in the ultra-male dominated field of combat journalism, she blazed a path for all those who would follow.
