If you’re new to these mountains or only backpack in the spring, it may surprise you to know that the fall is also a great time to go backpacking here.
By mid-October and heading into November temperatures in the local backcountry start to become more pleasant as the summer heat fades. The one catch is knowing where to find water. Because of our semi-arid climate water is less plentiful in the fall than it is in the spring, although two years of good rain have only added to the possibilities.
This talk will highlight a half dozen great backpacking trips through our local mountains to places that feature year-round water.
Join James Wapotich as he shares images, stories, and insights from his treks in our local backcountry. James is a trail guide, Volunteer Wilderness Ranger with Los Padres National Forest, and author of the Santa Barbara News-Press hiking column, Trail Quest. He leads classes on backpacking, wilderness awareness skills, and mindfulness in nature.
This free presentation is part of the Trail Talks series hosted by the Santa Barbara Public Library.
The next talk in the series is Thursday, October 10th, Medicinal Herbs along the Gaviota Coast with Emily Sanders
