Join former Director of California State Parks Russell Cahill for a discussion in the Presidio Chapel about his historical novel, Kepa, A Hawaiian in the Wild West. Kepa follows a Hawaiian sailor washed ashore from a shipwreck off the coast of Santa Barbara in the 1820s. His travels take him with Native Americans through conflicts at the Spanish Missions on to the settlements by the Hudson’s Bay Company on the Columbia River and back to the California Gold Rush. Admission is $5 paid at the door.
Russell Cahill, whose father is Native Hawaiian, writes from his home in Olympia, Washington. In 1966 he joined the National Park Service and served in Yosemite, Glacier Bay, Katmai, Washington D.C., and at Haleakala National Park on Maui. Later, he was appointed Director of Alaska State Parks and then Director of California State Parks.
