Carpinteria-based photographer Bill Robbins is proud to present a collection of his 60’s surf photography featuring Rincon and The Ranch, now on display at Lucky Llama Coffee House in Carpinteria. This collection, primarily consisting of striking black-and-white framed prints, captures the essence of these iconic surf locations during the mid-1960s.

Among the highlights is the iconic image “Soul Arch,” which exemplifies the classic style of surf photography from that era.

During this time, Bill was living in Summerland while attending photography school in Santa Barbara and surfed the local breaks as often as possible with his roommates and friends.

“In recent years, I’ve been digitizing my black-and-white film archives from those 60’s days of surf photography. Back then, before the age of surf reports and cams, we rode the waves at Rincon at the start of a swell, often alone with the other locals before the news spread. The hardest choice was whether to surf or take photos.”

The in-water shots at The Ranch were captured using an early Nikonos underwater camera, an upgraded point-and-shoot 35mm model. Its wide-angle lens required photographers to get close to the surfers to achieve compelling images.
