VINES & VISION: THE WINEMAKERS OF SANTA BARBARA COUNTY is a first-of-its-kind exploration of the beautiful region’s winemakers, vineyards, and wineries. The 632-page book, which will be released in November 2020, features nearly 1,000 intimate images by renowned photojournalist Macduff Everton and about 100 in-depth profiles by Matthew Dennis Kettmann, who started covering Santa Barbara wine’s scene more than 20 years ago including essays on the history of the region, a study of its unique geography, and analysis of important trends, Vines & Vision offers a thorough introduction to Santa Barbara County wine.
And yet, due to Such deeply reported portraits of both pioneers and newer generations of winemakers, Vines & Vision simultaneously serves as an engaging, personal snapshot of the world’s most exciting Wine region during a critical period in its existence.
“In a culture increasingly marked by quick sound bites of information and abridged attention span, we seldom have the privilege to experience thorough investigation and discovery. ‘Vines and Vision’ is one of those rare examples which demonstrates a metered pursuit to portray a multi-faceted representation of Santa Barbara County winegrowing. The diversity of this landscape is only rivaled perhaps by the variety of its people which requires not only patience but also a keen eye to carefully uncover. Through their tireless efforts, Matt Kettmann and Macduff Everton have done just that to produce a stunning work which harnesses the intensity of the topography and intimately captures the passion of those working within. The trust and intimacy that they have forged with everyone in Santa Barbara is shared throughout each and every page of this significant work that will forever hold a vital position in the history of this unique area.”-Greg Brewere
From the creators:
Macduff Everton, a fifth generation Oregonian, grew up in Santa Barbara, California, where he lives with his wife, the artist Mary Heebner. A longtime contributor to numerous magazines in the United States and Europe, including many decades as a contributing photographer for National Geographic Traveler, Everton is an internationally acclaimed photographer and author whose work is in the collections of public and private institutions, including museums in Paris, Lausanne, New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Tokyo. His work as a visual anthropologist culminated in the seminal The Modern Maya: Incidents of Travel and Friendship in Yucatán (Univ.of Texas Press, 2012).
Matthew Dennis Kettmann, a fifth generation Californian originally from San Jose, lives with his wife and two children in Santa Barbara, where he grows one vine of Santa Cruz Island zinfandel in the backyard. A senior editor at the Santa Barbara Independent and a contributing editor for Wine Enthusiast, he’s also written about wine for the New York Times, TIME, Smithsonian, and Wine Spectator. He makes a small amount of wine in most vintages under the name Periodista, which is the Spanish word for “journalist.”
Everton and Kettmann, both graduates of UC Santa Barbara, previously collaborated on Around the Table: Recipes & Stories From The Lark in Santa Barbara, in which Kettmann contributed a chapter on wine history, and Everton managed and photographed from start to finish. That project was the impetus for Vines & Vision.
