Archaeology in Challenging Times: Excavating at Omrit in Northern Israel
Prof. Daniel Schowalter,
Tipton Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Department of Religious Studies, UCSB
Excavating on the eastern edge of the Hula Valley in northern Israel between 1999 and 2017 presented a series of literal and metaphorical landmines in the recovery of ancient materials and the encounter with modern socio/political realities.
A field archaeologist with decades of experience, Daniel Schowalter has been Director of Excavations at Horvat Omrit in Israel and at Mandeure in France, and has excavated at Chersonesos on the Crimean Peninsula. He presently serves on the Governing Board of the Archaeological Institute of America.
Sponsored by the J.E. and Lillian Byrne Tipton Distinguished Visiting Professor in Catholic Studies Endowment in the Department of Religious Studies
