Hugh grew up in the UK, in both Wales and England, before migrating to California at the tender age of 20. He’s been a birder since the age of 12, and birds were a big part of the reason he chose Santa Barbara as a destination. He was an elementary school teacher for 32 years, before retiring a couple of years ago, which has freed up more time for nature study: birds, bees, dragonflies, butterflies–really anything that moves. He writes a monthly column about local birds for the Santa Barbara Independent. He takes pictures, thousands and thousands of them, and is going to share some of his favorites with you.
His talk will focus on how he got started in birding (and how you can, too); some of his favorite places to bird, from the deep ocean beyond the Channel Islands to the south, to Big Pine Mountain in the far north-east; and various places in between.
