1st ‘fStop Warrior’ Class Focuses on Aug. 10 Graduation

The first graduation ceremony for the “fstop Warrior Project” course is planned for 10:30 a.m. Aug. 10 at the Santa Barbara City College Wake Campus, 300 N. Turnpike Road, Santa Barbara.
Presiding Judge of the Santa Barbara County Superior Court Michael Carrozzo will be the guest speaker at the graduation ceremony. The second session of the course begins Sept 10. The fstop Warrior Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
The free, college-level course is offered to post-9/11 military veterans with the sponsorship of the college, which provided classrooms and printers, and Canon USA, which provided cameras.
During the course, veterans explore various aspects of life and photography in new ways. They discover unknown aptitudes that could turn into a rewarding hobby or even a new business, organizers said.
During the 12-week course, veterans connect with their cohorts and experience the camaraderie of the military while in the civilian world, which recreates the unique bond inherent to military life, organizers said.

The founder of the fstop Warrior Project, instructor Terence Ford, started the program at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton working with Marines in the Wounded Warrior Battalion.
Veterans, transitioning from military to civilian life, face a number of unique challenges while experiencing a dramatic change in their life circumstances along with the experience of war, the effects of which may be invisible.
Photography has been an effective avenue for dozens of veterans to move forward, Ford said.
Future expanded programming in the course includes an advanced photography class specific to veterans’ interests. Videography and film making are among others.
The course is designed for first-time photographers. Each session has a field trip; session one included a trip to the Getty Museum.
