In the last year, according to a report read at the City Council’s October 7 meeting, the City of Santa Barbara determined the cause of 89 percent of all fires it investigated, mentored 200 youths in the Job Apprentice program, witnessed DUI traffic collisions drop by 21 percent, repaired 124,500 square feet of streets and sidewalks, saw occupational injuries drop 11 percent, completed 19 Public Works projects at a cost of $58 million, cleaned 206 miles of wastewater pipes, scrubbed graffiti from 123,000 square feet of building surface, achieved a three-minute 25-second response time to calls for fire emergency service, answered all 911 dispatch calls within three seconds, planted 390 new trees, saw a 7 percent increase of visitors to the downtown and Eastside libraries, and increased participation in teen programs by 22 percent and youth sports by 96 percent.
