As individuals who have been involved with Santa Barbara City College, local schools and the community for many years, we would like to bring to wider attention the many awards and distinctions the college recently has received. These include recognitions in diverse fields such as the first federal Title V Hispanic Institution serving grant in its history, recognition for its technology programs and selection as one of the leading community colleges in the United States by the Aspen Institute for College Excellence.
Santa Barbara is fortunate to have a community college the quality of City College. The excellence of an institution takes decades to develop and continuing nourishment to sustain. Excellence does not occur by chance, but by dedicated, determined and focused efforts that continue over time. Historically, Santa Barbara City College has enjoyed the strong support of the community. Ensuring broad support for the college in the future will be important as the college engages in private fund-raising and seeks public support through the ballot. Recently, the Foundation for Santa Barbara City College raised $750,000.
Shared and clear leadership by the Board of Trustees and College President is the foundation for a united and coordinated effort among all constituents and stakeholders, including the important historical role of the faculty in college governance. Accreditation reports have emphasized the leading role of the faculty in the college’s success.
We encourage the Board of Trustees, the administration, the faculty and the staff of City College to continue to work together to sustain and improve this exemplary institution. The college is one of the finest anywhere.
