A sweep of a Los Alamos home retrieved 23 dogs who were thought to be abandoned, according to the neighbor who called the county. The dogs had adequate food and water when a team of 10 from Animal Services went into the home but were living in “squalid and unlivable” conditions, County Public Health stated in a press release. The team, which included a veterinarian, three Animal Control officers, three supervisors, and a veterinary technician, checked the dogs, which were all in relatively good condition, and vaccinated them before taking them to the Santa Maria Animal Center.

A number of the dogs will likely be up for adoption once the owner — not home during the raid — goes through the legal process. Many dogs are available for adoption now at the county’s three animal shelters in Santa Maria (548 W. Foster Rd.), Santa Barbara (5473 Overpass Rd.), and the LaPAWS Adoption Center in Lompoc (1501 W. Central Ave.).
