Signage Solution
Kudos to Ray Ford for his excellent, well researched and thoughtful cover story on train track crossings.
Crossing at the Carpinteria bluffs can be quite intimidating. Recently, a stealth, very silent train came ’round the bend with no warning, making any slow-moving humans easy targets. And a recent feature in the travel section of the Los Angeles Times about the seal rookery has brought plenty more visitors to this area.
After reading about solutions that include expensive and disruptive underground crossings, I wonder about a simpler solution: Why not post signage that has the expected train arrival/passage times? It could be as simple as a wooden billboard that fits with the landscape or as complex as the freeway-style electronic signs (but much smaller) to allow for updates.
