Galerie 707
Location: 707 Anacapa Street
Owner: Tamara Kinsell
Date of Opening: November 1, 2007
Focus: The distinctive historical building and patio dedicated to Galerie 707 set the scene for an eclectic mixture of artwork that spans multiple media. Pieces range from dreamlike, abstract oil paintings to colorful silk pillows and scarves to striking and contemporary glass-on-concrete mosaic sculptures, which are displayed at the gallery’s front entrance. “We’re looking for things that are unusual,” says owner Tamara Kinsell, herself a designer of unique jewelry that she displays in the gallery. And she has certainly succeeded, orchestrating a convergence of contemporary and traditional forms. Each piece speaks of a different inspiration, from Far Eastern philosophy to the beauty of the Italian countryside. Behind the display room lies a silk-painting studio where patrons are invited to come watch the artists at work. “The idea was to create a space where the artists and the public can interact,” explains silk painter Martine Dupuch.
Upcoming Exhibition: In addition to those by Kinsell and Dupuch, the gallery features pieces by a number of other artists, including Giselle Usher, Lori Ann David, and Trisha Tatch.
Hours and Contact: Galerie 707 is open Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays from 12-5 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., and by appointment. Call 963-8219 for more info.
