Santa Ynez rancher Slick Gardner-wild-horse rescuer turned
animal abuser-was back in jail last week for violating the terms of
his probation. On a routine visit to the Gardner residence last
Wednesday a probation officer discovered the rancher was in
possession of several wild horses, a practice Gardner was strictly
forbidden to resume. Under house arrest since last August for
animal abuse, Slick will serve the remainder of his one-year
sentence behind bars unless the court rules otherwise when he goes
before a judge later this week. Gardner was charged with animal
abuse after a February 2003 raid on his ranch found 550 wild
horses-brought ostensibly from Colorado as rescues-malnourished and
neglected on his property.
