No on B Seconded
Thanks to the Independent for its thoughtful position statement in opposition to Measure B. Your characterization of the 40-foot limit as “capricious and arbitrary” was right on target, and should be the clear compelling reason for all citizens to oppose this poorly constructed proposal. A large percentage of existing landmark buildings demonstrates that 40 feet is an unreasonably low limit for our city. It is indeed our city’s heritage to build artfully within the traditional 60-foot limit, and attempting to nullify this historically successful formula due to concerns over two or three recent buildings represents an unnecessary assault on Santa Barbara’s rich architectural traditions.
Our city’s planning department and design review boards have consistently demonstrated their ability to adjust to community concerns as they develop. Exerting appropriate control while supporting architectural quality are essential elements of a nuanced planning approach. We are nowhere near the need for the “last resort” solution that Measure B represents.-Brian Hofer
