Hear Hear
The one section in your paper I try never to miss is Opinions. It is always quite illuminating to hear what one’s neighbors are thinking.
So I would like to send a cheer along to Jane Benefield for her balanced discussion of the Occupy movement and the general state our country now finds itself in. I, for one, have preached for years, that it would only be by taking to the streets that any real improvement in our country’s many problems would ever take place.
On the same page, the letter from Bud Bottoms, one of my favorite creative people, raises the looming disaster of planetary overpopulation. [“Life Boat Earth,” 11/10/11, independent.com/taxchildbirth.] From two billion to over seven billion in just my lifetime. And he is right! Absolutely no one will discuss how this correctable problem should be addressed! Our political and other leaders run like scared mice whenever the subject is brought up.
Let’s all just hope that some kind of organized leadership springs from the Occupy movement to intelligently work on these and other major problems. Otherwise, as he predicts, our ship, Earth, is going under in the not-too-distant future.
