Art & Music Fest: A Benefit for the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County
Fundraiser of the Week
Do-gooders of Santa Barbara County take heed: This Saturday, our very own Arts Alive! (1 N. Calle Cesar Ch¡vez, Ste. 100) will open its doors to the community for a special night of art, music, dance, and celebration-all to benefit the area’s food banks. With two locations (one in Santa Barbara and one in Santa Maria) providing hunger relief throughout the North and South County, the Foodbank both collects and distributes food to charities, churches, youth programs, soup kitchens, and rehab centers. Last year alone, these fine folks doled out more than 7.3 million pounds of edibles to those in need.
And while you may have never donated a can of grub yourself, this Saturday’s Art & Music Fest to benefit the bank is the ideal way to make up for it. Not to mention that it’s probably the most fun-filled way to show your support and lend a helping hand to these hard-working individuals. For a mere $15 admission price ($5 for kids under 18), you can enjoy a full day of live music and dance, refreshments and hors d’oeuvres, and purchasable art and raffle prizes. Featured noisemakers include the Nicky Shane Band (led by the Guinness World Records-winning fastest harmonica player), the tykes of The Resistance, and the rock ‘n’ roll sounds of Left on High. Middle Eastern dance group Hip Blessings will also be on hand to entertain the crowd. Shane is also co-organizing the event, his second benefit show for the Foodbank. “I was homeless for a while, and after I became a stand-up comedian, then a musician, I would donate half of what I made back to organizations that helped others in need,” he explained. “I’ve always kind of done that.”
The benefit will also act as an exhibit for a number of local visual artists. The eclectic and colorful work of Shane, Don Ricky, and Howard Lamar will all be displayed-and up for raffle-throughout the event.
