In light of a U.S. Fish and Game population count that found more than 620,000 brown pelicans along the Pacific Coast and in other areas, the species has been nominated for removal from the endangered species list. If declassified, legislation like the Migratory Bird Treaty Act would still protect brown pelican nests and eggs, and state agencies would continue monitoring the birds’ population for a minimum of five years.
