Red Asphalt probably stands out in most young drivers’ minds as the grisliest moment of their Drivers’ Ed class. To keep the body count down, the current version of the infamous video will be part of a driver safety education class the California Highway Patrol sponsors on February 18, aimed at drivers ages 15-19.

Though teens are only 4 percent of the state’s drivers, the fault in fully two-thirds of fatal accidents are attributed to them. In fact, the leading cause of death for those 15-19 years of age nationwide is motor vehicle collisions, and California ranks as the state with the second highest number of such fatalities. “This tragic loss of young lives is a concern to us, and we hope this program can reduce the death toll.” stated CHP Captain Mark D’Arelli.
