Capoeira Sul da Bahia Plays Against Breast Cancer

Capoeira Sul da Bahia hosts their 3rd Women’s Encounter & Kids Batizado beginning April 20, 6pm at 617 East Gutierrez Street, Saturday April 21 at 100 East Carrillo Street and ending Sunday with a 12:30pm Earth Day Performance at Alameda Park. There will be multiple workshops include drumming, dance, Capoeira and a kid’s Batizado, all are open to the public. A special fundraising Event will be held Saturday April 21st at Red’s Wine Bar, 21 and over, with DJ Mano Gil to raise money for Teasha Curren. Teasha, a dear friend to many of the women in Santa Barbara’s Sul da Bahia’s Capoeira Group, was diagnosed with breast cancer last year at the age of 31. In the past year she has had three surgeries, chemo and radiation therapy. All proceeds from Red’s Wine Bar special Fundraising event will go to Teasha Curren to help cover medical costs and 20% of the profits from the 3rd Women’s Encounter & Kids Batizado will be donated to her endeavor to climb Mt Shasta with Breast Cancer Fund’s Climb Against the Odds.

Many have experienced a loved one struggling with cancer and feel at a loss in how to support them in their time of need. Support can come in many different forms from listening to their feelings to donating money to a cause of their choice. “For me, attempting to reach the summit will be a personal celebration of getting through my treatments, as well as a tribute to the courage it takes to face breast cancer.” Says Teasha of her Mt Shasta climb. “By climbing I want to encourage all those in the midst of the storm to keep going, and to acknowledge the often-overlooked support of caregivers, friends and family, and even strangers you meet along the way who lend a hand.”

Santa Barbara’s Sul da Bahia’s community understands the importance of supporting each other through the tougher games in life and values the supportive relationships women naturally create on a day-to-day level. Capoeira can be seen as a martial art that blends the elements of dance, music, rituals, acrobatics, and fighting. Historically speaking, Capoeira has been predominately a male dominated martial art; however, women are beginning to receive well-deserved recognition in this sport.
