Week in Sports: Foresters Battle the Barons
The Santa Barbara Foresters will take on the hottest baseball team in the California Collegiate League at 5 p.m. today (Sat., June 20) at UCSB’s Caesar Uyesaka Stadium. The Urban Academy Barons have won five consecutive games, including a 4-3 victory over the Foresters on Friday night in Compton.
Santa Barbara (8-4 overall, 2-2 in the CCL) will try to shake out of a two-game losing streak. Friday’s game went into extra innings when the Foresters pushed across a run in the ninth inning on Mark Castellito’s clutch single with two outs, tying the score 3-3. The Barons (6-4 CCL) scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th on a bases-loaded grounder. The Foresters almost pulled off a double play that would have ended the inning.
The teams will return Sunday to Compton, where the Urban Academy, sponsored by Major League Baseball, will host the finale of the three-game series. The Foresters will then be home for six consecutive games, including a league series next weekend against the San Luis Obispo Rattlers.
Other sports events this weekend include BMX (bicycle motocross) races at Elings Park and the start of the USPA Intra-Circuit polo tournament at the fields in Carpinteria.
UCSB golfer Scott Lewis, a surprised qualifier for the U.S. Open, will try to better his opening-round 81 on Saturday at the challenging Bethpage Black course in New York. Lewis, a 20-year-old sophomore from Henderson, Nevada, played in the U.S. Open sectional qualifying at Saticoy. He lost out in a four-way playoff for the final three berths, but as the first alternate, he received a call to enter the field a week ago when another golfer withdrew. Lewis had three double bogeys in his rain-delayed first round.

SEMANA NAUTICA
June 27-July 13 Semana Nautica (“marine week”) began in the 1930s when Santa Barbara residents organized sporting activities with visiting Navy seamen. It evolved into an annual sports festival open to the public around the July 4 holiday. There is no charge for spectators at any event, but the festival’s primary objective is to encourage participation. The 42nd Semana Nautica starts Saturday and Sunday, June 27-28, with a US Sabot regatta. Other events include age-group swimming, ocean swims, a 15-kilometer run, tennis and softball.
