3rd Annual Holiday Sound Check
Join the New Noise Music Foundation [newnoisesb.org] and Notes For Notes [notesfornotes.org] to celebrate the holiday season with a party you won’t want to miss! Legendary Depeche Mode songwriter and guitarist Martin Gore will hop on the turntables for a special hand crafted DJ set as part of the 3rd annual Holiday Sound Check, which also features special guests Douglas J. McCarthy of Nitzer Ebb and producer/DJ/guru Static Revenger, as well as a silent auction of rock ‘n’ roll collectibles.
Three years since first teaming up to bring this unique event to the music fans of Santa Barbara, New Noise’s executive director Jeff Theimer and Notes for Notes’ executive director Phillip Gilley are proud to once again present what’s becoming a December tradition. “Having Martin and his team donate their time and energy into this event really is amazing,” said Theimer. “Sometimes both Phil and I slap ourselves and wonder how such a huge star is so down to earth, rad, and open to new ideas. Martin personifies what both Notes For Notes and New Noise Music Foundation are about: a passion for music and willingness to go out of the way to help others listen, learn, and connect with music in whatever shape or form that suits them.”
It also helps that Gore turns out to be an amazing DJ. “Martin’s DJ set is one of the most unique and interesting musical experiences I have ever heard,” said Gilley. “It’s truly mind-blowing to see what he creates each year. His genius and songwriting are expressed in a different way through his spinning.”
Along with the music will be a unique silent auction with tons of Depeche Mode paraphernalia and other music-related items to fill your favorite person’s stocking with something you can’t get anywhere else. A full bar will also be on hand in case patrons get thirsty while they enjoy the beats, and light appetizers will help fill hungry bellies.
In addition to the regular general admission tickets, the organizers will be offering three different ticket prices for those who want more action. “This year, due to the awesomeness of Martin, we are adding a special meet & greet package that comes with a limited edition signed poster of the event, a group photograph with Martin, and, even more goodies,” said Theimer, who explained that these meet & greet tickets are EXTREMELY limited. “People literally fly in from all over the world for this event. It’s crazy. So jump on it today if you want the chance to rub elbows with Martin!” There are also two more VIP tiers for those seeking differing levels of access and fun.
But the regular price remains an affordable $30, which aligns with the two organizations’ goal of making music open to all. “Both Phil and I believe in accessibility for our programs and events,” said Theimer. “Why would a fundraiser be any different?” While this year’s space and production will be more elaborate than years’ past — 2010 was at the former Restaurant Nu on State Street and 2011 was at the Contemporary Arts Forum — both organizations wanted to ensure supporters and fans from all backgrounds can come hang out and party.
This year the event will take place in a warehouse space in the Funk Zone that, for the majority of the year, plays host to an amazing collection of high end, classic, and restored vehicles. “We thank Goodman Reed Motors for allowing us to take over their space,” said Theimer, who enjoys the challenge of decorating a new venue each year. “It’s a perfect fit and we think people will be excited to check it out.”
