Fleet Foxes Make Post-Coachella Stop at UCSB

Nowadays, it seems like every other indie band being name checked by Rolling Stone is laying claim to their Northwestern roots, and it’s no surprise as to why. While the folk sounds currently coming out of the region draw more comparisons to Dylan then they do Cobain, it’s certainly no secret that the area is entrenched in musical history. Case in point: Seattle’s current critical darlings, Fleet Foxes.

Fronted by Spin magazine’s Voice of the Year, Robin Pecknold, these baroque pop folksters are currently at the head of this Northwestern musical pack. Since the release of their full-length self-titled debut last summer, the band has been picking up fans and accolades at literally every tour stop they make. Sonically speaking, the Foxes layer soaring five-part harmonies on top of crisp guitars, twangy hooks, and buoyant drum parts to create a sound that is part Appalachian hymnal, part indie rock orchestra, and all aural bliss. And in the live setting, the result is even greater than it is on record. While the band is known for crafting and delivering loads of lush melodies, they’re also fast gaining a reputation as some of the most entertaining contemporary musicians to catch in concert. Between eerily spot on vocal harmonization and impromptu jams, the guys provide enough onstage banter to keep even the most cynical of scenesters laughing.

Still skeptical? Well worry not. This Monday, April 20, at 8:30 p.m. UCSB’s Associated Students Program Board will bring Fleet Foxes to the Hub for a show of near insurmountable musical proportions. The fivesome rolls through town straight off of their Saturday night stint at the annual Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio. They’ll also share the stage with openers (and label mates) Blitzen Trapper. And for those that were lucky enough to catch Trapper headline Muddy Waters Cafe last December, you can attest that this is one show you do not want to miss.
