Christina Djernaes Dies
Major Funding Force Behind Goleta Ice Rink Loses Fight with Cancer
Christina Djernaes, the attorney and mother of two who donated more than $500,000 toward the effort to build an ice rink in Goleta, died on December 12 after fighting appendiceal cancer for a year. The Solvang native and graduate of Santa Ynez High, UC Berkeley, and Hastings College of Law was 43 years old.
“Christina was a beloved board member and a champion for children’s causes,” said Ada Conner of the Greater Santa Barbara Ice Skating Association, the organization behind the rink. “It was her idea and funding that brought about the plans for the homework center in the new ice arena. She will be so greatly missed by all of us at GSBISA.”
According to her obituary, Djernaes was actively working on the rink and other goals of her nonprofit Djernaes Telos Foundation in the days leading up to her death.
