San Francisco jangle lovers The Morning Benders are finally starting to get the glowing critical praise they so rightfully deserve. And with the blogosphere starting to hum at the sound of the quartet’s debut full-length, Talking Through Cans, all we can say is, it’s about time. Part dreamy Shins-like balladry (“When We’re Apart”) and part punchy, piano- and drum-driven ruminations on unrequited love (“Waiting for a War”), Talking Through Tin Cans runs the pop gamutand scores points throughout. Highlights move from the stripped-down instrumentation and echoing vocals of “Heavy Hearts” to the country-tinged garage rock of “Chasing a Ghost” with ease, guaranteeing an eclectic sonic romp for listenersand a world of promise for my favorite Bay Area export.
