JEFF the Brotherhood
Hypnotic Nights
JEFF the Brotherhood’s seventh record opens with a simple sentiment: “I want a place where I can smoke meats, where I can drink and swim in the creek,” sing Jake and Jamin Orrall. Fair enough. Born and raised in Nashville, the brothers have a knack for crafting chugging garage rock. (Hypnotic Nights was coproduced by garage guru Dan Auerbach.) But on top of the riffs, they pour a heavy helping of fuzzy punk-rock chaos, along with a few well-placed nods to the quirky pop of early-career Weezer. “Sixpack” is a twisted mix of guitar feedback and speak-sing lyrics — until the instantly memorable hook kicks in. Later, “Leave Me Out” begs comparison to Nirvana with its slow and sludgy drum work, then curveballs us a meticulous guitar solo. In fact, Hypnotic Nights is filled with these little dichotomies, ingeniously blending the joys of youthful abandon with something that’s smarter, quicker, and more dynamic. JEFF the Brotherhood plays Velvet Jones (423 State St.) on Wednesday, October 17.
